Matthew Fleeger’s Path to Leading Gulf Coast Western

Matthew Fleeger did not take a straight road to the top job at Gulf Coast Western. After earning a business administration degree from Southern Methodist University, he entered the oil and gas business in the mid-1980s at the company his father had founded.

He spent eight years there learning management, financial operations, sales, and marketing. That period also gave him a working knowledge of corporate structures, mergers and acquisitions, and joint ventures, skills that would prove valuable in later endeavors.

A Detour Into Medical Waste

Fleeger then stepped away from the energy sector for several years. During that hiatus he founded a medical-waste management company, which he eventually sold to Stericycle. With that sale complete, he returned to Gulf Coast Western. Building and selling that business added another dimension to the corporate and acquisitions experience he had developed earlier.

His father retired in 2009, and Fleeger became chief executive officer. He also holds the titles of president and director. According to BOSS Editorial, he moved quickly to put growth plans in place and has continued expanding the company through a mix of acquisitions and partnerships.

Leadership Built on Disclosure

Investor communication sits near the center of Fleeger’s approach. He trains the company’s investor-facing associates to explain each joint venture thoroughly, and he insists that prospective partners see both the pros and cons of every opportunity. Full disclosure extends to financial decision parameters and engineering operations. Fleeger sometimes works with partners personally as they make investment decisions. Once a partner joins a venture, an associate provides regular progress updates through the end of the project.

His reasoning is straightforward. “Education and awareness are always an investor’s first line of defense against potential fraud,” he said. Gulf Coast Western, founded in 1970 and now headquartered in Dallas, continues to operate under that philosophy across its seven-state footprint. The company holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, and a full 70% of its partners have backed several of its ventures. See related link for additional information.
